Violet Jessop: Continuing to Inspire
In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day and Women’s History Month, I would like to shine the spotlight on Ireland’s Violet Jessop. For over 40 years, Ms. Jessop had a career as a stewardess at sea. During that time, she survived the sinking of both the Titanic and Britannic.
In 1998, I began writing Unsinkable Women: Stories and Songs from the Titanic for the stage. It was an opportunity for me to create a tribute to the passengers and crew lost at sea, as well as the survivors, during the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. In my research for characters, Violet Jessop’s loyalty and dedication stood out. Today, her life continues to inspire my work in theater as an actress and a playwright.
