TERRENCE P. ROCHE

Terrence Patrick was born in Queens, New York, on September 27, 1943, to Helen and Thomas P. Roche. Raised in Cambria Heights, Terry is the youngest of four children. His father was born in County Cork, Ireland. Terry attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Archbishop Molloy High School.  He then went on to St. John’s University, where he joined the United States Marine Corps Officer Training Program. After two years, Terry left St. John’s and joined the Marine Corps Reserves. Terry began his public service career in 1964 with the NYC Transit Police.  He transferred to the NYPD in 1965, and followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) in January 1968.  As a firefighter, he was assigned to Ladder Company 175.  He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1973 and assigned to Engine Company  236.  In 1979, Terry became a Captain and was assigned to Ladder Company 58.  By 1983, he had achieved the rank of Battalion Chief and was assigned to Battalion 6.  He was promoted to Deputy Chief in 1997 and assigned to Division 14. Terry responded to and helped direct rescue and cleanup efforts following the events of September 11, 2001, and after 35-years of dedicated service, he retired from the FDNY in 2002. Terry met Martha Hearn, when her family moved next door in 1954, and they were married in May 1965.  They have three children, daughters Kelley and Kristen, and son Sean.  The family moved to Kings Park in 1967, where Terry became actively involved in his children’s activities. When his girls joined the Girl Scouts,  Terry supported the troop with great enthusiasm, accompanying them on many trips and adventures. He also coached girls’ softball, boys’ basketball, and boys’ baseball, and served on the CYO CouncilSince January 2004, Terry has been an active member and Past President of AOH Division 3 in Pearl River.  He is a member of the Ronald J. Murphy Honor Guard, and was named Hibernian of the Year in 2023.  Terry enjoys organizing events and participating in committees, all of which have strengthened his connection to the AOH. He cherishes the camaraderie, friendships, and community service that the AOH has brought into his life.  Terry is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Kings Park St. Patrick’s Parade Committee, the St. Joseph’s Church Picnic Committee, and the Musical Moments Board.
