Aide to The Grand Marshal

PATRICK J. FINN

Patrick Joseph was born in Montclair, New Jersey, to Pat (née Walsh) of Asdee, Co. Kerry, and Dermot Finn of Tibohine, Co. Roscommon. He grew up in Belleville, N.J. surrounded by a strong Irish family network, which shaped his lifelong connection to his heritage.  Patrick attended St. Peter’s Grammar School in Belleville and Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington before completing what he proudly calls “the Catholic school trifecta”, graduating from Seton Hall University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In December 1987, Patrick married Helen Hraniotis, and together they moved to Montgomery, New York, where they raised their four children; a daughter Mary, (RIP), who was married to James Reddan (Co. Clare), and sons Steve (married to Ana) and Kevin, and a second daughter, Alyson, (RIP).  Patrick and Helen are the proud grandparents of three, Mary, Stella, and Leo Finn. Patrick spent his entire 45-year career with Wakefern Food Corporation/ShopRite, beginning as a warehouse selector in 1979 and retiring in 2024 as the operations manager of Wakefern’s Perishables Distribution Center. Patrick and his brother John were raised deeply rooted in Irish culture and spent their summers at Keenan’s or Carmody’s in East Durham, or in the fields of Kerry and Roscommon.  Patrick played GAA football for St. Joseph’s Minor GAA Team and attended Munster GAA football championship games with their grandfather, Jack Walsh, who helped Kerry win six All-Ireland Senior titles as left fullback.  Patrick has long been involved in the Irish community in New York, beginning with his playing days on the St. Joseph’s Minor GAA team.  He and Helen were active members of the Parents and Students of Irish Dancing & Music Association and proudly marched up Fifth Avenue in many St. Patrick’s Day Parades, as their daughter Alyson stepdanced with fellow students. Patrick and Helen were also members of the Cornwall Ceili Dance Group.  Patrick has been a member AOH Donald J. Whelan Division 2 for the past 20 years, where he has served as Marshal, Treasurer and Charities & Missions Officer, and has been the Head Chef for the division’s monthly Irish Breakfast.  He previously served as an Aide to the Grand Marshal in the 2011 Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Parade and continues to serve on the Parade Committee representing his AOH division.  In 2014, Patrick was the Guest of Honor for the County Roscommon Society of New York’s annual St. Patrick’s Dinner Dance.  The Finns have been active members of Holy Name of Mary-Assumption Parish since 1987.
