Senator Michael McDowell 

New York, NY, March 6, 2022 –The St Patrick’s Day Foundation, NYC will host their annual Gala Tuesday March 15, 2022 at the Sheraton Hotel Times Square at which they will honor the Grand Marshal of the 2022 NYC St Patrick’s Day Parade, James Callahan and Senator Michael McDowell from Ireland.

Senator McDowell will receive “The St Patrick” Award for his lifetime service to the Irish Nation.

Senator Michael McDowell is the former Tanaiste of Ireland, Irish Government Minister of Justice, Teachta Dála (TD), and Attorney General of Ireland. Currently he serves in the Irish Seanad as a Senator for the National University of Ireland since April 2016. Senator McDowell family has a long history of service to the Irish Nation, with his grandfather Eoin MacNeill founder of the Irish Volunteers in 1913, an organization that played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Irish State 100 years ago in 1922.

Senator Michael McDowell
Former Tanaiste of Ireland, Government Minister,
Teachta Dála (TD), and Attorney General of Ireland

Michael McDowell was born in Dublin in 1951 and was educated at Gonzaga College, Ranelagh, Dublin, from 1959 – 1968. He graduated in Economics and Politics from the National University of Ireland at University College Dublin, qualified as a barrister in 1974 and was called to the Inner Bar in 1987. He was elected to Dáil Éireann in 1987, 1992, and 2002 as a Progressive Democrat TD. He chaired the Working Group in Company Law Enforcement and Compliance which reported in 1998 and the Financial Services Advisory Group which reported in 1999. In July 1999 he was appointed Attorney General of Ireland and served in that post until June 2002. Appointed Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats Coalition Government formed in June 2002, he served as Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) from September 2006 to June 2007. He is currently an independent member of Seanad Éireann, the Irish Senate, elected by the graduates of the National University of Ireland in 2016 and re-elected in 2020. He is a member of the Oireachtas Justice Committee, the Committee on European Affairs, and the Seanad’s Committee on Procedure Privilege and Oversight. He practices as a Senior Counsel in the Law Library, Dublin.

Michael McDowell is the grandson of Eoin MacNeill founder of the Irish Volunteers in 1913, an organization that played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Irish State 100 years ago in 1922.

Senator McDowell is married to Professor Niamh Brennan Professor of Management at University College Dublin and Founder/Academic Director of the UCD Centre for Corporate Governance. They are the proud parents of three sons.
