etty McLoughlin is one of five children born to Pat and Kate Irwin in Lenarevagh, Glenamoy, County Mayo, Ireland. Betty emigrated to the United States by way of Philadelphia in 1962, and after a year of weekend visits, she relocated to New York City. Betty secured a position with the New York City Department of Education in 1995, and
retired in 2008. Betty joined the Irish American Society of Nassau in 1983 serving on its Board, she went on to serve as President from 2010-2011 and again from 2016-2017. She was the Grand Marshal of the Mineola Parade in 2012, and remains very much involved to this day. Betty was the Mayo Woman of the Year in 2010, and currently she is the President of the Society. Betty was honored by the Queens County AOH in 2014 and received the Shining Star Award from the Catholic Migration Services in 2014. Betty was honored as an Aide to the Grand Marshal of the Bayside Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, and honored by the Nassau County AOH during their 2024 Feis. Betty married Jim McLoughlin from Drumkeerin, County Leitrim in 1966 at St. Jerome’s in Brooklyn, and in 1972, they moved to Bayside, where their four children were born. Betty is very involved in her parish Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and served as President of the Rosary Society in 2014-2015.
