John Drury Keenan, (Brother Christopher Brian, OFM) is one of six children born in the Bronx in 1942 of Irish immigrant parents Thomas Keenan from Ballindereen, County Galway, and Mary Drury Keenan from Tibohine, County Roscommon. Rev Chris’s family moved to Wood-Ridge, NJ where he attended Assumption Franciscan Parish along with his siblings, twins Mary and Thomas, James, Brian, and Ann. After dropping out of St. Mary’s High School, Fr Chris worked construction in Reno, NV, and returned home to a Teamster trucking company job in East Rutherford, NJ where he met Fathers Mychal Judge OFM and Benedict Taylor, OFM who were in their first assignment as Franciscan priests. While working in trucking during the day, Fr. Chris attended Seton Hall University at night. He was received into the Franciscans of Holy Name Province in 1964 and was given the name Brother Christopher Brian, OFM. He made his vows in 1965 and at this time he is celebrating his 50th year as an ordained-brother-priest. As a Franciscan, Fr. Christopher Keenan went on to attend St. Bonaventure University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1967 and attended Washington Theological Union where he obtained a Masters of Arts Degree in 1971, in 1975 he studied at the School of Theology and Ministry and in 1977 received a Doctor of Ministry from New York Theological Seminary and subsequently did postdoctoral studies at the Boston Theological Institute from 1979 to 1981. He served 18 years in three graduate schools of theology and ministry and was a re-founding member of sabbatical and ongoing education programs at the Washington Theological Union, Boston College, and the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and Ministry, Cambridge, MA. In 2001, after September 11th, Chris was chosen to serve as a chaplain of the Fire Department of New York.
