Deputy Inspector William J. Gallagher

William “Bill” Gallagher, a proud Irish American who traces his roots to County Cork, Ireland, was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. His parents, Walter and Margaret, instilled in him a deep appreciation for his Irish heritage.

After graduating from Xavier High School, Bill pursued higher education at Saint Joseph’s University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He furthered his studies at New York Law School, obtaining a Juris Doctorate.

Before embarking on his law enforcement career, Bill served with distinction in the U.S. Army. In 2000, he joined the New York Police Department (NYPD), where he has held various patrol and investigative assignments. His roles have included serving as the commanding officer of Manhattan’s 19th Precinct and the Central Park Precinct. Bill, who rose to the rank of Deputy Inspector, currently serves as the Commanding Officer of the NYPD Legal Bureau.

In addition to his service to the NYPD, Bill is a member of several professional organizations. These include the NYPD Captains Endowment Association, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #188, and the American Legion NYC Police Post 460.

Bill is also a member of the New York Bar, further testament to his commitment to justice and the rule of law. His life and career are a testament to his dedication to service, both in the military and law enforcement.
