Robert J. E. Murphy

Robert John Emmett Murphy was born on November 1, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY, to George and Margaret (nee Healy), the youngest brother to Harold, George and Peggy.  Bob, as he is known to family and friends, traces his roots to Co. Cork on his father’s side and Co. Roscommon on his mother’s.  Bob grew up in St. Augustine’s Parish, Park Slope Brooklyn where he met his wife, Mary Ellen Lavelle.  Bob and Mary Ellen were blessed with five children, Robert Emmett, Patrick Sean, Kathleen Ann, Mary Ellen and Kevin Brian (RIP), and are the proud grandparents of eight, and the even prouder great-grandparents of two.  Bob received his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from St. Francis College in 1971 and was the first recipient of the Brother Urban Gonnard, OSF Proficiency in Management Studies Medal. He completed his military obligation serving 6 months active duty and 5-1/2-years active New York State National Guard.  He is a member of the American Legion, Post 1847 Breezy Point, NY.  Bob’s professional career was with the Dime Savings Bank of New York retiring as First Senior VP and Director of Human Resources.  Following his retirement Bob joined the NYC Department of Education in 1992 where he retired from fulltime employment and continues on a part time basis since 2012 as an HR Representative.  Bob joined AOH Division 5 in 1963, and in later years transferred to Division 35 where he was elected Financial Secretary for 18 years.  Bob served as Kings County AOH Grievance Officer for 4-years. Bob is a member of the Knights of Columbus since June 1962 when he joined Columbus Council #126.  He has been the Financial Secretary for the past 25-years.  He is a Sir Knight of the Long Island Assembly-Knights of Columbus.  Bob was the founder of the Knights of Columbus-Columbus Council #126 Pipes and Drums in 1995 and serves as Drum Major.  Bob is a member of many other organizations, a Sir Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a member of the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, and a member of the St. Patrick’s Society of Brooklyn.  Bob also serves on the Board of Rosary for Life, Inc as Treasurer.  Bob is a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians, Midwood Brooklyn, where he is a Eucharist Minister and member of the Parish Council and Finance Committee.
